In the city of brotherly love you’ll find a growing Muslim population flourishing in society. The outside images of women draped in Islamic attire and men wearing distinguished garments and beards are common. This tale of fiction goes beyond the outside image. It is a rare view into the thoughts, family life and intriguing practices such as plural marriage. You’ll meet four friends that share the bond of sisterhood, Layla, Sumayah, Juwariyah, and Sakinah are examples of how Muslim women live. This dramatic urban tale has an Islamic twist that will surely arouse emotions as you read what it’s like being one of the Real Muslim Wives of Philly.

I'll start by saying that I'm not Muslim. I read this book as a suggestion of a Muslim friend and enjoyed the book well beyond my expectations! I read the book in a few hours. The author did a great job of providing insight into Muslim marriages and the struggles that people of the faith face. She did not paint the people of the religion to be perfect and I felt like I knew the characters and could relate to each of them despite our differences. I also appreciated the way the author translated what certain Arabic words meant within the text when she knew content clues might not be enough for someone unfamiliar with the terminology. This book gave me an even greater respect for the Muslim sisters and a much deeper understanding of their lives. Ms. Muslimah did a great job of showing all the affects of sin, fornication, and polygamy. If this book teaches you nothing else, it will teach you not to judge others because we never know what situations or circumstances may arise that could potentially put us in the same predicament as those we judge.

This book is a gr8 read 4real 1st beinG Philadelphia resident...elle wrote the book 2 make me feel that I can real vision where events were takings place but also very relateable .2 non-philadelphians also..she was on point with the story line from the beginninG from with Shakinah & Basir and their marriage. We all know a "Sumayah" "Lamyah" and "Juwariyah". Juwariyah was a humble passive type sister that was a good mother and wife and held her tongue eith her husband and prayed and tried 2 smile thru all the turmoil she was going thru. She just followed the Islamic laws with her husband taking on more wives and not letting it phase her in public. She held in her emotions and her husband getting all the praise tht he was paying all her bills etc etc when in fact she was in public housing and receiving public assistance. When her husband used her Access card 2 purchase food 4 his upcoming wedding. This book was well written &I was so excited 2 answer the questions @the end of the book. The character reference guide was a nice addition 2 the book. Cant wait 2 read part
Interesting perspective for me as a non Muslim. I know she didn't write this to become a representation of Islam to the rest of the world, but of course it represents some type of Islamic thought if read by someone from the outside. It was eye opening. How often do polygamous unions actually occur in Muslim communities... Especially western Muslim communities? I'm curious. The stats will likely never be accurate, because these unions are not recognized by the government.
Type Os were distracting I began to count them.
I agree with another reviewer that the characters needed more depth, background, and development to connect the reader and make them become more involved with reading. It read like a first draft, or the beginning idea to an upcoming novel with lots of potential.
However, there was a lot of "reality star" like drama that kept me reading and finishing the book in several hours. I've heard horror stories about sisters in Philly and about fights breaking out in masjids, may Allah protect us and guide us all because none of us are perfect and without sin. The book is fictional and does not depict the true beauty of Islam and I could see how kafirs could have misconceptions. It does depict SOME attitudes and experiences of Muslimahs that occupy urban spaces and I appreciate their point of view in this book.
Overall, I would be interested in reading a sequel to this book with better editing and more development in the writing of the characters and storyline.
I normally will try to read a book, however getting it and finishing it are to different stories I normally will not finish more than 30 pages before stopping. But Real Muslim Wives of Philly made a record for me I bought this book yesterday afternoon and was finished but 700am this morning only because my husband made me put it down last night lol. This book left me waiting for another one. This book had me captivated starting from page one. turning the pages like what in the world. I was sad to see that I was getting closer to the end. I had my Ipad up and trying to hide that I was reading while at work lol. I will recommend this book to anyone for the Drama, realization, the thrill, and it even had sad parts that brought me down like oh no. Can't wait for the next book to come out.
Great job on this book! This book displays many situations that can occur when those aren't abiding by the religion correctly, however it also displays how Allah will handle a strong believer. I loved the reality of characters. The sad part is THIS STUFF HAPPENS, deny deny and you're telling a lie. But the fact that the author brought a well rounded point of view, and offer the characters redemption for their actions ended the book pleasantly. Everyone doesn't have a happy ending but the endings are fitting for their actions. I look forward to reading more!
This book is entertaining about flawed people. If you are looking for facts about Islam a fictional book is not the place to look. If you want Arabian culture this not the book - it's based in Philadelphia - in the US - Americans. Is the normal behavior of Black Muslims - no but there are people like this in the faith. I am a Black Muslim this is not common behavior. As I stated these are flawed people. If you keep that in mind book is OK it's like junk food. Most Black Muslims wouldn't dare behave in this manner. That's why it's a fictional story not a case study. I would say to anyone if you want to know how we live culture norms ask a Muslim don't read fiction. People read works of fiction of different religions and cultures that do not show true norms this book is no different. This is a short soap opera. So expect overblown characters, melodrama and silly situations. It's not real.
